Have you ever experienced a moment as a leader where your awareness shifted, and it completely changed the way you lead?
Perhaps you suddenly saw yourself differently, understood another person more deeply, or gained clarity on a complex situation you were navigating. These moments of transformation don’t happen by accident—they are the result of a leader who is willing to grow in awareness.
Awareness is foundational to effective leadership because it shapes how we see ourselves, others, and God’s work in and around us.
Our level of awareness is directly connected to:
- How we view ourselves and our identity (for me this means rooting in my God-given identity)
- Our willingness to embrace reality as it truly is, not just how we wish it to be
- The values that guide our decisions and leadership
- Our openness to new information that challenges our current perspective
- Our ability to operate from a secure identity rather than fear or ego
- Our courage to face the hard and uncomfortable reality
- What we choose to give our attention
- Taking intentional space to reflect and connect the dots in our day
Servant leaders lead with courage and love by cultivating their awareness because they know it impacts every decision, action, and how others experience their leadership presence.
3 Action Steps to Grow Your Awareness
Here are three practical ways to intentionally increase your awareness this week:
- Pause and Reflect Daily
Take 10 minutes at the end of your day to prayerfully reflect. Ask yourself:- Where did I sense God’s presence today?
- What did I notice about my reactions, thoughts, and decisions?
- How am I relating to (the opportunity or challenge/ situation)?
- Seek Honest Feedback
Invite a trusted mentor, team member, or peer to share one thing they see in your leadership that they want you to continue and one thing you might consider changing to lead at your highest level. - Practice Perspective-Taking
Choose one situation or relationship that feels challenging. Practice changing perspective by asking yourself:- How might the other person be experiencing this situation?
- Which of my core values is showing up here the most?
- What might be most uncomfortable for me to see in this situation?
- What would it look like to show up as my most grounded self-spiritually here?
When you take intentional steps to grow your awareness, you’ll not only lead with greater clarity—you’ll also create space for God to transform you and those you serve.
